Abstract: Design and fabrication of a two-dimensional AlGaAs/GaAs-based integrated optoelectronic cellular array (IOCA) were described in which each cell consists of a simple electronic logic together with optoelectronic devices which perform the global I/O function. The IOCA chip consists of an N × N array of cells, with each cell containing a vertically light emitting diode (LED), a photoconductive detector, and GaAs-based electronics which drive the LED, amplify the detector signal, and perform a thresholding function. The optical elements make it possible for the cells to be fully interconnected using a free space interconnect element such as a hologram. While data can be loaded into the array optically, provision is also made for interfacing the array to the electrical world. The chip design is similar to that of a random access memory (RAM) without address code. Electrical connections between the nearest neighbor cells and the electronics at the perimeter of the array provide input/output and cell selection capability. An 8 × 8 array requires a chip size of approximately 2 mm × 2 mm. Designs of the individual components of the IOCA chip were chosen to facilitate development of common processes.
