(last updated on 2024/01/01)
Abstract: Heart failure (HF) is a medical condition in which the heart loses its ability to pump blood efficiently. This chapter focuses on HF caused due to systolic dysfunction of the left ventricle, which is the most common and widely studied type of HF. It begins with an introduction to HF and its treatment, including medical management, biomarkers of disease severity and progression, and the effects of HF on quality of life (QoL), written to orient the behavioral interventionist to the complex world of HF treatment and to illustrate the need for behavioral interventions in HF treatment. This is followed by a review of biobehavioral HF interventions, such as comprehensive disease management programs, telehealth interventions and aerobic exercise programs. Next, talk therapies, such as motivational interviewing (MI) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), are discussed. The chapter concludes with future directions for biobehavioral interventions.
