    Abstract:
Studied whether the conclusions drawn after using traditional or statistical combining procedures differed from one another. 32 graduate students and 9 faculty members were randomly assigned to use 1 of the 2 techniques to draw inferences about an identical set of related studies. It was found that users of the statistical method perceived more support present in the literature and estimated a larger magnitude of effect than did traditional reviewers. Conditions did not differ with regard to recommendations for future research. Although several differences were uncovered that were related to academic status, combining procedure effects were general across academic status and reviewer gender. The desirability of adopting statistical procedures in psychology is discussed. (13 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved). © 1980 American Psychological Association.
