    Abstract:
Nicotine is a multifaceted drug. It acts on a variety of nicotinic receptor subtypes widely distributed throughout the nervous system. Nicotine both stimulates and desensitizes these receptors to affect a variety of neurobehavioral functions. This complex of actions illustrates how nicotine can have adverse effects, such as promotion of tobacco addiction, as well as potentially therapeutic beneficial effects, such as alleviation of pain and cognitive enhancement. The chapters in this book describe the levels of investigation in nicotine research from receptor mechanisms through neural system effects to behavioral and clinical effects. With an integrated approach using molecular-and receptor-level investigation together with animal model neurobehavioral studies and human clinical studies, progress can be made to identify critical neuropharmacological mechanisms for adverse and potentially therapeutic effects of nicotine. This will aid in the effort to understand the role nicotinic systems play in neurobehavioral function and to develop novel nicotinic ligands for clinical use.
