    Abstract:
Autism is a developmental disorder characterized by impairments in social, communication, and language functioning, and a restricted range of behaviors and interests. Individuals with autism vary in terms of severity and symptom expression in each of the domains. A general overview of the disorder is provided, with an emphasis on the development of infants and toddlers. Current information regarding genetics, early brain development, and early social and cognitive development, including play, social skills, language, and imitation skills, is provided.
