Abstract: This study analyzed relationships between psychopathology presented by volunteer medical students and success in brief psychotherapy. Success in psychotherapy was related to inward-directed pathology (neuroses), regardless of severity. The findings suggest that when brief psychotherapy is offered to medical students, they will avail themselves of the opportunity and those with inward-directed pathology can achieve significant clinical benefit in a short time. Those with outward-directed pathology (character disorders) may need to be prepared for entering long-term psychotherapy.
