  1. Thompson, RJ (1979). Effects of maternal alcohol consumption on offspring: Review, critical assessment, and future directions. Journal of Pediatric Psychology, 4(3), 265-276. [doi]

    Abstract:
Investigations during the last decade, of the effects of maternal alcohol consumption on offspring are reviewed and considered as representing a period of "rediscovery" in the historical cycle characterizing this area. The evid-dence concerning etiology, the existence of a Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), and the effects of moderate alcohol consumption are critically evaluated. Future research needs and directions, particularly design and measurement factors, are discussed. Quality science is emphasized as necessary to achieve maximum gains in knowledge and societal acceptance of preventive strategies during the current Zeitgeist in which there is interest in the health consequences of life-style behaviors. © 1979 Society of Pediatric Psychology.
