    Abstract:
This chapter reviews the mechanisms underlying reward-guided behavior and their implications for alcohol addiction. It can be divided into three parts. First, I review recent innovations in the analysis of goal-directed behavior using instrumental conditioning procedures and outline a model of motivated behavior based on hierarchical negative-feedback control systems. Secondly, I describe the anatomy and function of the cerebral cortico-basal ganglia networks, the neural implementations of motivational and motor-control hierarchies. And finally, I discuss the implications of the hierarchical model for our understanding of addiction in general and alcohol addiction in particular. © 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
