Dr. Hendrix's program research focuses on developing interventions to support the family caregivers of chronically ill patients. She is presently funded by the NIH-National Institute of Nursing Research to investigate the effects of an individualized, experiential training about home care for family caregivers given before hospital discharge of their loved ones suffering from cancer. Dr. Hendrix is also a nurse investigator at the Geriatrics Research, Education, and Clinical Center at the Durham VA. She has been selected to serve on the Nursing Research Advisory Group (NRAG) of the Department of Veterans Health Affairs, Office of Nursing Services. Dr. Hendrix and her VA Transitional Care Partners team were one of the 10 recipients of the 2012 VA Office of Nursing Services Innovations Award, a national award mechanism that recognizes nursing leadership in quality improvement.

Training Informal Caregivers of Frail Older Veterans Before Hospital Discharge
Veterans Affairs Health Services Research and Development (HSR&D) Pilot
PPO 09-272-1
03/2010-02/2011
Role: PI
Project Goal: The specific aims of the study are to (1) determine the feasibility of conducting an
individualized, tailored training program for informal caregivers of frail older veterans prior to
their hospital discharge and (2) determine the impact of this training program on self-efficacy
and caregiving preparedness on informal caregivers of frail older veterans. As a secondary aim,
data will be collected on patients’: physical symptom intensity and distress and use of
emergency services (ED) or rehospitalization within 14 and 30 days of hospital discharge.
TransitionaL Care (TLC) Partners for Older Veterans at Home
Veterans Affairs Medical Center – Geriatric Education Center
01/2010-09/2012
Role: PI
Project Goal: The TLC program is an NP/PA-led transitional program that supports the hospital-to-home transition of older veterans who are at high risk for rehospitalization, emergency
department visits, or institutionalization. Based on Naylor’s Transitional Care model, the TLC
program will identify hospitalized older adults at high risk for complicated home discharge.
Thereafter, the TLC NP/PA will conduct hospital visit prior to discharge as well as home visits
after hospital discharge. Other TLC partners for home visit include social worker and
occupational therapist. Through the TLC program, we aim to reduce rate of rehospitalization,
hospital days of care, emergency department visits and institutional care of patients; and
promote preparedness and reduce burden among informal caregivers. We also intend to
increase patient’s and caregiver’s satisfaction towards the VA health care.
CONNECT for Better Falls Prevention in Community Living Centers (CLCs)
Veterans Affairs Health Services Research & Development
EDU 08-417
08/2009-07/2012
Role: Safety Officer
Project Goal: This is a randomized, controlled, single-blind study testing whether facilities receiving CONNECT (educational intervention that teaches staff to improve connections within and between disciplines, improve information flow,a and seek out cognitive diversity in problem-solving) plus a falls QI educational intervention (FALLS) will result in: 1) improved fall-related process measures; and 2) decreased fall rates compared to facilities receiving FALLS alone.
Enhanced Self-Efficacy Training for Informal Cancer Caregivers
National Institutes of Health
1P01-NR010948-01
09/2008-07/2013
Role: Project Director
Project Goal: The overall goal of this study is to examine the effects of an enhanced caregiver training protocol that not only teaches informal caregivers knowledge and skills for managing patient symptoms, but also provides strategies for managing their own psychological distress. We anticipate this training will increase caregivers’ self-efficacy and improve important caregiver outcomes (depression, anxiety, burden, quality of life) and patient outcomes (symptom distress/intensity, depression, anxiety, and quality of life). Our study will compare the effects of this protocol to an education control condition that equates for interventionist time and attention.
Palliative and End-of-Life Care in Advanced Nursing Practice
Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA)
D09 HP09346
07/2008-06/2011
Role: Education Coordinator
Project Goal: The goals are to 1) Strengthen the existing MSN curriculum with respect to palliative and end of life care; 2) Raise the level of understanding of the advanced practice nursing students as well as clinical preceptors who are ethnically, racially, and gender diverse concerning issues at the end of life so that competent end of life care can be delivered to underserved populations; 3) Establish affiliation with clinical sites in rural and underserved areas of NC and assist in educating and evaluating clinical preceptors and staff at these sites; 4) Evaluate the proposed project, refine, and make revisions so that the project is sustainable.
