Dr. Mitchell Knisely, PhD, RN-BC, ACNS-BC, joined Duke University School of Nursing on July 1, 2018 as a member of the Healthcare in Adult Populations Division. Dr. Knisely’s research interests are in the areas of precision health and pain management. Particularly, his program of research seeks to optimize pain assessment and management through a better understanding of the biopsychosocial determinants of chronic pain phenotypes and associated treatment responses in individuals with chronic conditions. The long-term goals are to determine biopsychosocial markers to: (1) identify patients at increased risk for development of chronic pain and/or poor pain control, and (2) personalize strategies for pain management. In the clinical arena, Dr. Knisely has practiced in intensive care and perioperative areas, and has led or contributed to several initiatives to improve pain management in acute and outpatient care settings. He is board certified as an Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist and in Pain Management Nursing. Dr. Knisely earned his BSN from Purdue University and his MSN and PhD from Indiana University. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in genomics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing and trained at NIH's National Institute of Nursing Research Summer Genetics Institute. His research and training have been supported by several of grants, including two NIH T32's in genomics (T32NR009759) and behavioral nursing research (T32NR007066). Dr. Knisely is actively involved in a number of professional organizations, including the International Society of Nurses in Genetics and the American Pain Society where he is a member of their Early Career Advisory Group.
