Abstract: The anulus fibrosus (AF) of the intervertebral disc is a highly structured material made up of alternating tissue layers with collagen fibers oriented +30° and -30° to the circumferential axis. Special organization of the AF gives rise to strongly anisotropic behaviors which may contribute to its mechanical function. A continuum formulation for the AF as a linear orthotropic material with a complete set of material properties is proposed. Finite element implementation of the model is also developed to further compare model predictions with experimental findings for the AF in tension.
