Abstract: While flow-dependent viscoelasticity can explain much of the observed dependence of cellular response to amplitude and frequency of loading, as well as spatial position in the explant, contributions of the flow-independent viscoelastic mechanism may also be considered to be significant, particularly in tissues with large values of hydraulic permeability. In this study, a model incorporating both flow-dependent and flow-independent viscoelastic mechanisms, the biphasic poroviscoelastic theory, is used to predict the mechanical environment of the extracellular matrix within a cartilage explant in response to a forced oscillatory displacement.
