   Abstract:
   We review the development of the concept of transformation acoustics, through which sound fields can be arbitrarily manipulated by complex acoustic materials. The properties of these materials are themselves defined through the application of a desired coordinate transformation to the sound fields. The resulting acoustic material properties are, in general, smoothly inhomogeneous and also anisotropic. Nevertheless, such properties can be realized through composite material design approaches. While still in its infancy, transformation acoustics enables the design of novel devices that could not easily be created with other approaches.
