    Abstract:
In order to study the response of endothelial cells to complex flow fields, an asymmetric sudden expansion flow chamber is developed which creates a region of flow recirculation. Flow can be characterized as two dimensional over 80% of the chamber width for Reynolds number less than 473. In the present study, confluent endothelial cells are exposed to flow recirculation for 24 h and cell heights and shapes are measured. Computational fluid dynamics is used to determine the stresses acting on cells.
