Abstract: A study was carried out to quantify the anisotropic properties of the meniscus in tension. Skeletally-mature dogs underwent open surgery to create a meniscal tear in the right stifle joint. Tensile test samples were pre-equilibrated in 0.15M NaCl and width and thickness were measured. Samples were tested in uniaxial tension using a custom-built material test system. The resultant data provide evidence of highly anisotropic behaviors for the solid matrix of both the native and healing meniscal tissue.
