    Abstract:
The multi-resolution time-domain (MRTD) algorithm represents the spatial variation of electromagnetic fields in a wavelet basis, yielding a time-domain algorithm with considerable advantages vis-a-vis traditional algorithms such as the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD). In a multi-resolution framework basis functions are added locally, to account for increased detail. However, algorithm complexity increases significantly by adding wavelet levels. As an alternative approach, we model the time-domain fields using scaling functions alone, with the scaling-function complexity tied to the associated spatial complexity of the wave problem. Specifically, in regions for which detail is required, small scaling functions are employed, yielding increased spatial sampling. In regions for which a coarse representation is adequate, large scaling functions are employed. The key to this hybrid framework is development of a rigorous procedure for connecting between two distinct scaling-function representations, with that being the subject of this paper. A mathematically rigorous procedure is developed, and several example numerical results are presented
