Abstract: Fundamental theories of diffusion and molecular transport are reviewed as a starting point for understanding the complex migration processes in solids. It is shown that in diffusion the author determines which of a number of lattice defects controls the diffusion mechanism. In addition, ionization of these defects can lead to concentration-dependent diffusivities. In molecular transport, complications can arise if the impurity molecule reacts with the host lattice. Such an effect can also create a concentration dependent flux. Ion-exchange can also influence transport as the lattice of the host solid tries to maintain electroneutrality
