    Abstract:
The wave induced oscillations of a ship or an ocean structure are modelled by a forced nonlinear oscillator with a cubic nonlinearity. The response of the ship to wave action of increasing amplitude is studied. The oscillations undergo a period doubling route to chaos followed by a crisis. To control the capsizing motion of the ship, a model reference adaptive control system is proposed. The control law consists of proportional, derivative and nonlinear feedback. The adaptive control gains are time dependent and they force the system response to follow the period-one limit cycle of the reference model. It is shown that the motion of the ship is stabilized about the limit cycle of the reference model for wave forcing amplitudes beyond the critical magnitude for the onset of chaos induced crisis.
