    Abstract:
This paper presents the basic principles of luminescence spectroscopy used to detect trace organic substances on surfaces and some examples of application related to surface luminescence detection. These applications include the analysis of a synthetic fuel sample spotted on filter paper, the study of the adsorption process of a tumorigenic fossil-fuel material into mouse skin, the quantification of various coal liquids by sensitized fluorescence measurements, and the detection of potentially hazardous polyaromatic hydrocarbons by a sensitive surface detection technique, room temperature phosphorescence.
