Abstract: A method of reducing the observation time threshold required to make high-resolution broadband spatial spectral estimates is presented. Based on a Laguerre operator expansion of the measured array output, a stochastic rational approximation of the received process is introduced. The attraction of the multichannel Laguerre (MCL) approach presented is the generation of a low-order model of the array output process. Such a rational representation is motivated by the approximation of the propagation steering vector by a Laguerre partial series expansion using only a few modeling coefficients. Performance comparisons between the MCL approach and other broadband strategies are presented which illustrate the applicability of the MCL method in reducing observation time threshold
