    Abstract:
Spatial maps of voltages or times in the form of contour maps are now often used to present measurements either from the body surface or from the epicardium as a means to portray directly the interaction of different regions of the total heart. Similar maps of individual cardiac structures are used in more detailed studies. Automated construction of such contour maps allows a large number of accurate maps to be constructed and thereby provides the means to examine the electrical events of an entire cardiac cycle and to compare normal with abnormal sequences of excitation and repolarisation. Special problems of producing contour maps in this environment include the wide range of voltage or time measurements sometimes presented in a map, missing experimental values occurring unpredictably from some electrodes, the highly irregular and frequently changing map geometry often required, and the high computational efficiency necessary to process routinely large numbers of maps with relatively modest laboratory computer systems. The contour mapping system reported here solves these problems. The system includes program modules for measuring the map potentials, for specifying and refining map geometry, and finally for constructing the resulting contour maps. This report defines the problem to be solved, gives a solution strategy, summarizes the characteristics of the values to be displayed on the maps, and describes the procedures used to specify the map's geometry
