Abstract: A study was conducted to quantify the tensile properties of articular cartilage in an experimental model of meniscectomy. The meniscus was completely resected in the right knees of 4 skeletally mature mongrel dogs. The left knee was used as an unoperated control. Animals were sacrificed 12 weeks after surgery and both legs stored at -20°C until testing. Successive tensile stress-relaxation tests were performed using a screw driven uniaxial testing system. All tests were performed in a 0.15M NaCl bath at room temperature. The findings were then compared with those of both human osteoarthritis (OA) and experimental models of joint instability.
