Abstract: Walter Mignolo is an Argentine semiotician, philosopher, and literary scholar who has devoted his career to study the historical foundations of the modern/colonial world system and imaginary since 1500. He is a William Hane Wannamaker Distinguished Professor of Romance Studies at Duke University and has written several award-winning books, such as The darker side of the renaissance: literacy, territoriality and colonization (1996), and Idea of Latin America (2006). In this essay, Mignolo takes us back to his childhood in the Argentine countryside, through his years as a university student, to his theories about coloniality/modernity, and his proposal of decolonizing knowledge and moving away from European-centered epistemologies.
