Abstract: The fin-de-siècle concept of “women’s liberation” attributed to Egyptian lawyer Qasim Amin (d. 1909) has been revived for the age of the Islamic awakening, both in state discourse and in writings of thinkers associated with the Islamic movement. Two major conferences organized in Cairo around the turn of the twenty-first century commemorated this notion of women’s liberation.
