Abstract: Difficulty in maitaining exercise regimens over long time periods is a common problem. This study examined the efficacy of a combination of stimulus control and self- reinforcement procedures in the acquisition and maintenance of a walking exercise program using a multiple baseline design. The intervention strategy was introduced sequentially to each of three middle-aged, overweight males. Levels of exercise increased in a regular and gradual fashion following introduction of the behavioral treatment techniques. Improvement was maintained over a two-year period. © 1980.
