    Abstract:
Artificial neural networks (ANN) are being increasingly used to solve a variety of scientific and engineering problems concerned with unknown and varied functional relationships among measured variables. Such a problem in using (ANN) to solve complex problems in geophysics is addressed. Feedforward two-layer networks are used to solve two problems. First, in prediction of oil saturation from measured seismic velocities and second, prediction of fracture density from measured seismic velocities. The computational paradigm of neural networks offer several advantages in solving problems within the geosciences. Examples are shown of the usefulness of ANN in solving geological and geophysical problems of significance
