    Abstract:
Inhibition of barnacle settlement was achieved using low frequency (30 Hz) sound waves on laboratory-reared larvae of Balanus amphitrite Darwin. Less than 1% of very young cyprids (0 days old) settled in the presence of the sound waves. Cyprids caught in plankton tows responded very similarly to young laboratory-reared larvae. Although percent settlement tends to increase with older and therefore less discriminating larvae, low frequency sound reduces the percentage of metamorphosis for cyprids up to 13 days old. © 1984.
